Lazy Dadurday

"What do you guys want for breakfast?" I ask my three pajama-wearing kids flopped sleepily over two couches on a promising Saturday morning. They’re with me every Saturday morning as part of a divorce agreement. We call it "Lazy Dadurday." And lazy it is. We wake up late, then trek to the bookstore, the pet store, the mall, or the pool, and just let it all hang out.

"What is there?" the kids ask absent-mindedly.

My children have faced the same breakfast choices since they were old enough to chew: frozen waffles, cereal, and toast. No more and no less. It's their version of death and taxes. Nonetheless, the sweetly inquisitive response — what is there? — is always the same.

It's as if they'd been replaced overnight with benevolent alien imposters who'd carefully studied everything about us but our breakfast rituals.

Easter and Dads

Dads have the power to enchant the kids when they can indulge in simple activities and celebrations along with the kids, and Easter provides an excellent opportunity for this. In addition to Easter decorations for the home, here are a few creative activities that will excite the kids immeasurably if dad can join them:

1. Baking an Easter Bunny Cake: If dad does not do much cooking, it is still possible to bake a bunny cake using a cake mix and readymade frosting that makes the job simple. But it will simply amaze the kids to see their dad baking a cake, and the Bunny Cake is going to be something too special for any kid in the world anyway.

2. Decorating Easter Eggs: All you need to do is to poke a small hole delicately in an egg, and drain it out till the shell becomes empty. Clean it, dry it, and now it is ready for funny decorations. Let your imagination run a riot, and encourage the kids to let their creative juices flow on the eggshells to create some wonderful decorations.

Of dinosaurs and dads

I just came across a headline on topnews.us that I thought was hilarious: "Fossils Reveal Dinosaurs Were Stay-at-Home Dads". The first paragraph reads "A study published in the journal Science reveals that many dinosaur fathers spent quality time baby-sitting the kids. This means that we need to give dinosaurs an extreme make-over from thinking of them as coldblooded, pea-brain tyrants to warmblooded, empathetic partners."

Well who would have thought? I guess you could call them Stay-At-Home-Dinosaurs (SAHD). Great! Nature leads the way. So I just wanted to say to all the cynics, I'm sure dinosaur dads taking an active interest in looking after their offspring is NOT the reason they're extinct. And a big up to all human stay-at-home-dads for following the parenting model of a species that lived for millions of years! :-)

Don't give up on your kids

This is a clip from tv show "Fresh Prince of Bell Air" with Will Smith, in this clip Will Smith gets reunited with his estranged father (Lou) after 14 years of absense, who tells him that he is coming to spend the summer with him. But Lou disappoints Will again by telling him that there trip will have to be postponed.

Even thou this is acting (great acting), I was inspired to post this clip.
Real live can be a lot harder.

Why you should always check your children's homework

Well - I guess below is the ultimate reason why parents should always check their children's homework before they hand it in. This was submitted by a first grade girl for a homework assignment:

After it was graded and the child brought it home, she returned to school the next day with the following note:

Dear Ms. D.,

I want to be very clear on my child's illustration. It is NOT of me on a dance pole on a stage in a strip joint. I work at Home Depot and had commented to my daughter how much money we made in the recent snowstorm. This photo is of me selling a shovel.
