Baby teeth eruption out of sequence

Last year I did some fact finding on the eruption sequence of baby teeth (i.e. which teeth appear first and then which appear next). All well and good I thought as sure enough our little man followed the statistical eruption sequence (if a bit late) - lower central incisors, upper central then lateral incisors (well one of them) ... then ... nothing for 6 months! I was beginning to get worried when I noticed some full on teething symptoms again (drooling, rosy cheeks, nappy rash, etc) but no tooth in sight.

Finally we realised that one of the first upper molars was actually coming through ... and not only that ... a few days later we spotted another one on the other side, then another two. So within a couple of weeks he suddenly had 4 first molars! All of them appearing totally out of sequence of course!

Well I'm pretty sure he's alright though and he'll have all of his teeth eventually. I guess it proves the point that you can't always go by statistics (especially not with kids). While he is still missing 2 of his lateral incisors and the canines of course, he is definitely enjoying the molars as it allows him to properly chew food now. Of course it also means there are more teeth to brush now - YAY!

This is what my dentist

This is what my dentist suggests as well.

Hey Brad - thanks for your advice. So I've got another half year, then Noah will be 2 1/2 - I'll post an article on the first visit to the dentist! :-)

Hiya Stef, the common advice

Hiya Stef, the common advice is 2 1/2 for the first visit. Once at school they can see a school dental therapist, (if you can find one...they seem to be hard to find these days)but it helps to come in with Mum and Dad at this stage. Thanks very much

Hey Brad - cool ... great

Hey Brad - cool ... great tip. I guess that goes for everyone who wants to get their children used to going to the dentist. By what age (at the latest) would you say should children have been seen by a dentist? I.e. to check if everything is OK?

Im a dentist and a recent

Im a dentist and a recent new dad, if you have any concerns at all take your wee one in with you at your next appointment, most dentists are happy to see them with you, it builds a good patient in the future when all you are doing is taking a look with Dad there in a comfortable environment for the young one.
