Dads – are you running on empty?

Just the other day, my wife pulled me up on a classic ‘male-ism’ … she said, I thought you weren’t going to be doing work tonight.
You know what my response was … “I’m not, I’m just replying to a couple of e-mails.”

Its faulty logic I know, but that’s a man’s mind – we are so linier in our thinking, that it’s hard to move from one job to another, when the first is left undone … in other words, square work away, and then, focus on the family.

I’m stoked to have a wife who is so protective of my time. If she wasn’t, I’d always be running on empty, trying to fit 30 hours plus sleep into a 24 hour day … and it would be my relationship with her and with my kids that suffers.

One guy told me that it’s like trying to drive a car as far as you can when the fuel gauge is on Empty
He said that as dads, we’re really good at assuming everything will be okay.

We ignore the warning lights and the needle hovering in the red because things have always worked out in the past.

But I’m learning that just as driving on a mostly-empty fuel tank will damage an engine, it’s also true that only giving our kids the dregs of our time at the end of the day will also cause a breakdown.
The truth is that we need to invest time in our kids and avoid running on empty.

And it’s never too late to start making time for your kids. Even teenagers occasionally want to talk – usually at 2 a.m.
