Scott's Weekly Product Review - Baby Signing

Baby Signing -

Here is a nother great Service that I think parents all should know about, baby signing!

Its adopted from signing for the deaf also and believe you me I sometimes wonder if Im making any sort of progress at all.

I had heard about baby signing through another friend of ours who uses it all the time, and she definitely see’s progress!

So what is baby signing then and when can it be used, please see below for details:

4-6 months - You can start signing at any stage with your baby, but keep in mind that a very young baby, in most cases, will take many months before they will use the signs themselves. This is not to say that they won't begin to recognise the signs' meaning. If you begin signing with your six month old baby you can generally expect to start seeing some results by the age of 8 months - if you follow our guidelines.

7-8 months - Your baby's memory skills are expanding daily, by repeating your signs regularly you are helping with this development. You can anticipate your baby repeating a beginner sign in around 6/7 weeks

9-10 months - Your baby's co-ordination skills are now very good and he will find it easier to perform the more simple signs.- e.g. milk, eat, more, bath, help, telephone. If your baby is showing interest in signing it should only take around 4/5 weeks on average.

11 months + - Your baby is very capable of understanding the whole process in a much shorter time now. By introducing signs for objects your baby loves you are ensuring a guaranteed result - some signs may be adopted instantly but others may take 2 to 3 weeks.

I have seen it work first hand, that a baby needs the ability to be able to communicate and they become very frustrated not being able to. And by signing they are then able to sign back and tell us what they are wanting – is it food, milk or solids or maybe they just need help!

Pros
· Great way to engage with your little one
· Simple signs to use
· All the signs that you need are covered
· Cheap and cost effective
· Contributing to their knowledge and development
· Fathers now have something else they can do with their child
· Can be used to communicate with children with other learning disabilities

Cons
· Parents who want quick fire results need to have patience
· Might not work for all parents and children

To be honest as you can probably tell i found it hard to find anything against the development of babies, its a great service and I hope that more parents especially fathers, as lots of us are visual and practical people get into it.

I rate this 10/10
