Stay at Home Dad - Tennis anyone?

Hi,

I have just given up Full Time work and am currently on about 6 months Parential Leave to look after my 4 month old son. I have taken over my partners Maturnity leave for the balance of 12 months, she has been back at work now for two weeks.

These last couple of weeks have been great! Been at home most of the time but find I have sometimes up to a couple of hours a day when I can pop out for a while.

I am a Tennis player and rung the organiser of the Ladies Midweek Tennis to see whether I could bring my son along and join in where they run a creich. She was quiet flat with me and said she hadn't had an enquiry like this before and it was all women who attended. She even compared it with Thursday night MOTS (Men Over Thirtys) tennis. Occasionally I have known woman to have joined in with us on this one and it is night tennis not during the day during the week with a creich! She said she would take it to a commitee meeting and would get back to me. There has been two weeks of tennis since then, and, do you think she rang me back?? No. I had actually spoke with a couple of other home Mums who would have liked to see Caleb and I come along, I guess I need to get the OK officially though. Might take it further with the commitee myself.. Anyway, thats my gripe, I wonder if there are any other home Dads out there who have had similar experiences??

I am also intersted in a coffee group for home Dads or if there are any other places to meet online or elsewhere in my area? I live in St Johns, Auckland.

Hi Peter, The club is

Hi Peter,

The club is Glendowie Tennis club. The midweek "ladies" tennis with a creche for $5 runs between 9AM and 11AM on a Thursday.

Stay at Home Dads are welcome to bring their little ones along and join in!

Are you going to be a SAHD (Stay At Home Dad)? Give me a txt or call if you like, we may be able to RV? My number is in the Global Directory of Fathers Support Groups, the link is at the top of the page.

Good luck with the birth of your little one, hope all goes well!

What is the name of the club? What day and time do you usually go? I live in Hillsborough, but any reason to flommux women sounds great to me ^_^ .

The new addition is due Wednesday, however. If he doesn't make an appearance by then, then he's getting cut out! Drastic, but gotta be done, unfortunately.

So probably won't be able to make it for a couple of weeks or so. A good excuse to get out though in a few weeks. Let me know.

Good news about the tennis,

Good news about the tennis, wonder if they will drop the Ladies bit of the name.
Been so wet I took Ashleigh to the mall for a run around after the walk at the gardens. We will see you at the next one, we may even have a few more days join us if they are reading this. Would be nice to out number the mums.

Well... guess what?!? The

Well... guess what?!?

The day my message was posted, I got a phone call yesterday from my tennis lady! She said they had had a meeting and took it to a vote! The pros won against the cons!! So, I am now most welcome to attend. Other fathers are welcome with children now! Good news!

Thanks for your feedback guys. Peter, looks like you were right, guess I just got a little impatient..

In regard to Pram Walking, Mathew, I think I saw you at the Botanical Gardens a couple of weeks ago. I was with my partner Jenny and Caleb. I wanted to catch up with you after, but you had gone. It will just be Caleb and I next week, see you then!

Well, back to bubs, keep up the good work Dads!

Heya Bill, I've been a SaHD

Heya Bill,

I've been a SaHD off and on for 7 years. I have 1 son, 7, and another boy about to be born any second...

To me there seems to be a continuing theme of perhaps reading too much into a situation in recent posts. There could be a multitude of reasons of why this women has not got back to you, all of which has nothing to do with you being a man.

I guess when you are new at something and perhaps feel out of your comfort zone that things may seem not as they are. If I can be so bold as to offer advice. I would suggest that don't suspect you are being discriminated against until you have irrefutable proof to the contrary. THEN go nut's!

In all these years I can honestly say I don't think I have ever experienced sexism towards me in an intractable manner. I have had to break some barriers down but I have done it in a good humoured way and probably in a completely oblivious way as well. I simply go about doing what is right for my son and myself, and probably surprised a lot of women along the way.

Hey a winning smile can work on chicks too ^_^ .

3rd comment tonight! I'm on fire :P

Hey Bill Good luck joining

Hey Bill

Good luck joining Ladies Midweek Tennis, keep us posted if they let you in or not.

I go Pram Walking almost every week, most of the time I am the only dad, but one or two more have come along in the last few weeks. The next one is not far from you, around the Panmure Basin, Wednesday 7th Nov. Meet 10.15am at the car park off Peterson Road, Mt Wellington (off Waipuna Road).
