Sleepless in bed

Just had a new baby - can't get any sleep? The sound of a crying baby when it's not "your shift" can totally ruin getting any sleep. A few more radical solutions from the combined wisdom of dads around the world include:

* taking sleepers (not recommended)
* ear plugs (OK but can be quite painful to wear them for extended periods)
* sleeping in a different room / house altogether (works but might be a hassle / uncomfortable)

So I'd like to throw in a *NEW* solution - WHITE NOISE. Yup, you heard me ... use noise to get some sleep. I've been using the old "unplug the TV signal cable and turn up the set" trick to get some sleep when staying in motels with thin walls and annoyingly loud neighbours (the noise of an untuned TV set - also called "white noise" - blocks out all other noise and lulls you to sleep). Now that we've got ipods and smartphones there's of course an easier way to do this - just get one of the free white noise apps or browse to simplynoise.com for some free noise. So get some white noise and enjoy the silence!
