Being the great water sports people that we are, we decided to make sure that Pyper learnt to swim and could “hold her own” in the water so to speak!!!
Therefore we enrolled her in swimming, this became something very important especially when in NZ and Australia lots of children die as a result of being around water no matter in what capacity. Also little ones love water, so as a precursor to taking to taking her to the pools she learnt two valuable lessons which where – Dad is going to get me completely wet and it’s a matter of time until I go to learn properly since Dad taught himself to swim and not very well, so don’t learn from him.

We tracked down a good swim school, who specialise in teaching little people how to swim – now don’t bother even thinking about getting swimming lessons for your little one until they are over 6 months old. Finding a good swim school can be difficult but do ask around you will always hear of one good place, and think about the times they do the swimming is it early or later and is it going to fit in with their eating and sleeping patterns? Is it affordable? How many lessons and for how long? 30 mins is usually enough for their minds and is the pool inside and heated and are you both going to be warm?

Its fun as you both get to go and hang out and teach your little one a survival skill, we had fun and its only her first time so cant wait to see how she progresses.

Good luck and keep safe around water!

Hi Scott Great to see you

Hi Scott
Great to see you and your children love the water. Here at Swimming New Zealand we have just developed a water proof booklet designed for parents to use at bathtime. It has 8 tear out activity cards at the back which support the Active Movement philosophy of child centred learning and a holistic approach to development. The activities are fun, developmentaly appropriate and enhanse brain development. In addition because you are there at bathtime playing singing and massaging your pre schoolers they are never left in the bath alone.
Hope you enjoy our web page full of ideas and maybe you or your friends might like to try out the bath time booklet too. They are $10 I have been using mne since Jessica was 3months and now she is three and its still going strong :)
