Make your own advent Calendar 2010

A couple of years ago we wrote a very popular article about making your own advent calendar (see "How to make your own advent calendar for kids") ... judging by the number of hits this article receives there's still a lot of interest in the topic. So I thought I'll have another look around to see what creative ideas have sprung over the last two years.

1. Online advent calendars are the latest social networking phenomenon (if you believe the guys at one224) - check out their "create your own online advent calendar site www.one224.com.

2. A variation of the advent calendar we wrote about - comes with a nice little video on youtube and foolproof instructions. Halelujah!

The advent calendar diaries - Dec 14

Great effort by Junior School in Kent (UK) - they created an online advent calendar that features Christmas traditions from 25 countries round the world. It's a great site to explore with kids as the questions and answers are revealed step by step and there is additional information about the featured country. I think I might know the answer to the question they are asking on the homepage - "In what country is Pavlova a popular Christmas dessert?" :-)

Well you have to hand it to the Swiss for coming up with novel ideas to get them through a long winter - the village of Neuenhof runs an annual photo gallery for ACTUAL windows of houses to be decorated as an advent calendar door/window.

Check out this online advent calendar put together by visumedia. Nice animations and great concept (top YouTube viral videos with a chance to win some prizes). Make sure you click on previous days as well - particularly doors 3, 5 and 6 ... also when your children are near definitely avoid doors 2 and 9.

Today's calendar will work a treat for all those dads and kids who religiously follow the Doctor. Great initiative from the BBC and lots of goodies for fans of all ages (well almost all ... my 19 month-old isn't that keen on watching Doctor Who ... yet).

The Christmas Calendar Diaries - Dec 9

I'm loving the graphics and idea of this MP3 advent calendar by the Thrill Jockeys. Especially for DJ dads (like me) - it's great to explore a bit of music with your kids. With the Thrill Jockey's calendar you get to experience a bit of eclectic music every day. Nice one!
