How a Child Learns

If a child lives with criticism, he learns to condemn

If a child lives with hostility, she learns to fight

If a child lives with ridicule, he learns to be shy

If a child lives with shame, she learns to feel guilty

If a child lives with tolerance, he learns to be patient

If a child lives with encouragement, she learns confidence

If a child lives with praise, he learns to appreciate

If a child lives with fairness, she learns justice

If a child lives with security, he learns to have faith,

If a child lives with approval, she learns to like herself

If a child lives with acceptance and friendship, he learns to find love in the world.

Dorothy Law Nolte, 1972

My son stood beside me very still.

When I turned, I nearly knocked him down.
'Move out of the way,' I said with a frown.

He walked away, his little heart broken.
I didn't realize how harshly I'd spoken..

While I lay awake in bed,
God's still small voice came to me and said,

'While dealing with a stranger,
common courtesy you use,
but the family you love, you seem to abuse.

Go and look on the kitchen floor,

Greetings! Someone asked famous British playwright Oscar Wilde what the difference was between a professional and amateur author. He answered, “Professional authors write even when they don’t feel like it.”

Are you someone that effectively fathers even when you don’t feel like it? Remember that it’s not about whether you “feel like it,” it’s about doing what’s right.

Case closed.

Warmly,

Mark Brandenburg
